Land use in Hawai'i remains the most regulated of all the fifty states. According to many sources, the process of going from raw land to the completion of a project may well average ten years given that ninety-five percent of raw land is initially classified by the State Land Use Commission as either conservation or agriculture. How did this happen and to what end? Will it continue? What laws and regulations control the use of land? Is the use of land in Hawai'i a right or a privilege? These questions and others are addressed in this long-overdue second edition of Regulating Paradise, a comprehensive and accessible text that will guide readers through the many layers of laws, plans, and regulations that often determine how land is used in Hawai'i. It provides the tools to analyze an enormously complex process, one that frustrates public and private sectors alike, and will serve as an essential reference for students, planners, regulators, lawyers, land use professionals, environmental and cultural organizations, and others involved with land use and planning.

Since German reunification, the federal and state governments have been committed to preserving the ecological potential on the “Green Belt”, the former inner-German border. The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) is committed to the preservation, maintenance and development of large-scale landscape areas on the Green Belt within the framework of testing and development projects as well as large-scale nature conservation projects. The linking of nature conservation goals with regional sustainability is becoming increasingly important for their permanent anchoring on site. The hitherto insufficiently recorded effects of nature conservation funding on the development of the regions were the reason for the BMBF research project "Green Belt - Model Region for Sustainability" (2007-2010). Regional scientists from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HAWK) examined the effects of federal funding on regional sustainability in an interdisciplinary network with economists from the University of Göttingen using the example of four regions. This report presents the disciplinary and interdisciplinary results as well as the respective and jointly developed recommendations for action for funding providers and beneficiaries.

Following his acclaimed guides to air, fire, and water, David Carle now offers a fascinating exploration of one more primary element of the natural world-the land beneath our feet. From earthworms and earthquakes to Earth Day, this concise, engaging guide is a multifaceted primer on the literal foundation of California's environment. Carle tells how soil ecosystems function, discusses what lives in the soil, and examines various soil types. He then turns to the relationship between humans and the land, and investigates the various uses and abuses that land in California endures: large scale agriculture, mining, and development, as well as fires, floods, and erosion. The guide also details the history of land use in the state, making it an essential resource for understanding our total reliance on soil, the marvelous substrate that is the basis of life.• Covers the entire state, including California's wildlands, farmland, cities, and landfills• Assesses California's ecological footprint on planet Earth• Discusses many different life forms found in soil, including bacteria, fungi, insects, and mammals• Features 92 color photographs and 18 maps A book in the Californians and Their Environment subseries, dedicated to understanding human influences on the state's ecology and natural resources
